RAVELLO FESTIVAL

Nestled on the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is a town that embodies the perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Known as the “City of Music,” Ravello hosts one of Italy’s most prestigious classical music festivals, the Ravello Festival. With its breathtaking venue and rich history, this event has become a must-visit for music enthusiasts worldwide.

In its current form, the Ravello Festival has roots stretching back to a series of initiatives that make it one of Italy’s oldest festivals. Girolamo Bottiglieri and Paolo Caruso pioneered the festival’s concept, envisioning a cultural event to solidify Ravello’s reputation as a music hub.

The festival’s historical connection to Richard Wagner is particularly noteworthy. Wagner himself visited Villa Rufolo, enchanted by its beauty, which inspired the festival’s founders to associate his name with the site. This association was so compelling that it led to the first concerts being held there in the 1930s. The Teatro di San Carlo Orchestra performed several times with programs dedicated to Wagner, attracting the attention of the Princes of Piedmont. In honour of their visit, Ravello dedicated a belvedere to the Princess, which still exists today between Hotel Palazzo Avino and Hotel Palazzo Confalone.

RAVELLO FESTIVAL’s Evolution

The idea of a festival dedicated to Wagner remained dormant for a while until Paolo Caruso revived it twenty years later. Caruso introduced the innovative concept of a stage suspended in mid-air, a logistical marvel that became a hallmark of the festival. Thanks to the efforts of the Provincial Tourist Authority, the festival took shape in the summer of 1953, commemorating the seventieth anniversary of Wagner’s death. The “Wagnerian concerts in Klingsor’s garden” marked the official launch, featuring performances by the Teatro di San Carlo Orchestra under the batons of Hermann Scherchen and William Steinberg.

For many years, Wagner’s music remained a central theme of the festival, and even today, his compositions receive special attention, reflecting the festival’s historical roots and ongoing reverence for the composer.

The Ravello Festival 2024, running from June 30th to the end of August, promises an array of symphonic and chamber music concerts held in the stunning setting of Villa Rufolo.
