Imperial City Festival - Rothenburg ob der Tauber

Imperial City Festival

Step into a time machine every year on the first weekend in September, as the Imperial City Festival transports you to Rothenburg‘s golden era against the backdrop of the old town. The entire old town of this medieval German town transforms into a sprawling medieval warehouse, offering a unique experience like no other.

Immerse yourself in the rich tapestry of Rothenburg’s history at the Imperial City Festival, where diverse Historical groups from different eras come together. From the band of knights camped in a tent camp in front of the Rödertor to the troops of the master from the 30 Years’ War marching through the city and the medieval citizens and the Schillingsfürst peasant bunch in the Herrngasse – there’s something to pique everyone’s interest. And the best part? You can be a part of this bygone era with no entry fee.

27 historical groups participate in the Imperial City Festival. Their camps are located in the old town and directly outside the city walls, for example, at the festival meadow or at the Kummereck.

Friday evenings are particularly atmospheric. First, all groups move from the double bridge in the Taubertal through the old town in a torchlight procession to the market square, where there is a fire and light show with music at the town hall at the crowning conclusion.

Get ready for an exclusive treat: For the first time ever, on early Sunday afternoon, under the expert direction of Christoph Korwitz from the “Freie Reichsstädter zu Rothenburg ob der Tauber e.V.”, a thrilling historical battle will be re-enacted on the ice meadow in the Taubertal. This is a unique opportunity not to be missed.
